Local Area Unemployment Statistics
Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) is a federal/state cooperative statistical program that produces monthly labor force estimates of civilian labor force, total employment, unemployment and unemployment rates by place of residence for many geographic regions including states, counties, metropolitan statistical areas, prosperity zones, and some cities. LAUS estimates are key indicators of local economic conditions and the model estimates are based on current and historical data from:
- the Current Population Survey (CPS), the household survey that is the official measure of the labor force for the nation
- the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program
- state unemployment insurance (UI) claims information
Additional program information can be found at the BLS website.
