What is a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)?

An MSA is a geographic area comprised of one or more counties with a central city having 50,000 inhabitants or more. MSAs may include adjacent counties that have a high degree of social and economic integration with the urban core as measured by commuting patterns. North Carolina has 15 MSAs where the core resides in the state consisting of 43 counties.
