North Carolina releases a list of Top 300 Private Employers, compiled annually, based off the first quarter employment size as reported by the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wage (QCEW) program. The list breaks out employment by Manufacturing and Nonmanufacturing employment.

In first quarter of 2018 the list is comprised of 60 manufacturing employers, approximately 20 percent, while nonmanufacturing employers filled the reaming 240 spots. This is consistent with previous year’s.

Since 2013 Wal-Mart has been the largest employer in the state while Duke University and Food Lion have competed for second place.
