The 2009 North Carolina Governor’s Conference on Hospitality and Tourism was held March 1-3 at the Raleigh Convention Center and the Raleigh Marriott City Center. Industry leaders from the state’s resorts, attractions, destination marketing organizations, hotels/motels, estate rental companies, restaurants, and retail outlets met to find out about the latest trends and issues facing the travel industry.

The 2009 Governor’s Conference on Hospitality and Tourism adopted a number of initiatives aimed at reducing the negative environmental impacts associated with hosting such an event. Even with the adoption of these practices, conferences and events still result in significant amounts of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to one of the most threatening challenges to the tourism industry: climate change. It is everyone’s responsibility to actively address climate change, and the Division of Tourism has partnered with Sustainable Travel International (STI) to mitigate the unavoidable carbon emissions of the 2009 Governor’s Conference facilities.
The Division encourages all conference participants to consider their own environmental impacts and to take measures to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with attending any conference. Conference participants interested in offsetting their carbon emissions can use STI’s carbon calculator to calculate the amount of greenhouse gas emissions associated with attending the conference. Your tax-deductible contributions will be invested in certified renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
