ABOUT OUR OFFICE

The Piedmont Regional Office (PRO) provides planning services to a nineteen county region consisting of the western Piedmont, northern foothills and the mountain counties that border Virginia.  While this service region includes both the Piedmont-Triad metro area (Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem) and the Charlotte area, our services primarily focus on smaller and mid-size communities beyond these urbanized areas.  Our staff has expertise in strategic planning, long-range planning and visioning, the development and implementation of land use ordinances, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), downtown revitalization, historic preservation and North Carolina planning statutes.  We also provide customized training programs to local planning boards, boards of adjustment, historic district commissions and governing boards.

To request planning services from the Piedmont Regional Office, please contact Darren Rhodes, Chief Planner, at (336) 761-2148.

PRO Planner Cari Hopson leads a small group discussion at a Community Forum in Mount Pleasant

The Piedmont Regional Office has recently completed a number of year long projects including land use plans for the Towns of Norwood and Dobson and economic development strategic plans for the Town of Sparta and a cluster of three Surry County towns (Dobson, Elkin, and Pilot Mountain). These economic development strategic plans were developed as a result of the communities participating in the NC Rural Center's Small Town Economic Prosperity Program (NC STEP). The office is also very close to completing land use plans for the City of Albemarle and the Town of Mount Gilead as well as a community plan for the Town of Mount Pleasant in Cabarrus County.

The Piedmont Regional Office has initiated work on several new projects this fall. Among the new projects, PRO staff will be assisting the Towns of Dobson, Ramseur, and Stanfield with major revisions to their land use regulations. PRO staff will also be working with the Town of Midland on the development of a land use plan.
