Water Conservation Resources of Business and Industry

Tips to Save Water:

  1. Re-use water – Capture condensate, rainwater, and other free sources of water for process water; landscaping, flush water, cooling towers and ornamental ponds.
  2. Install water-saving fixtures – Installing faucet aerators, ultra-low-flush toilets, low-flow shower heads, waterless urinals and water flow timers can help conserve significant amounts of water.
  3. Repair leaks promptly – Establish a plan to monitor for leaks both inside and outside your facility and maintain water-using equipment.
  4. Use “dry cleanup” practices – Don’t use water to wash down dirty areas.  Use a broom and a dustpan.
  5. Reduce water discharges – Minimize “blowdown” and discharges from cooling towers and boilers.
  6. Turn off all water-consuming equipment – When equipment is not in use, turn it off to save water and reduce the chance of leaks developing.
  7. Perform a water audit – Audits help pinpoint areas where you can reduce or eliminate water used by equipment and processes.
  8. Educate Employees – Make water conservation education a part of each employee’s training.
  9. Use employee incentives – Reward employees for coming up with water conservation tips and suggestions.
  10. Install flow restrictors – Where incoming water supply flow is greater that is required to operate equipment, flow restrictors can reduce consumption.
  11. Plan in advance for droughts – Industries should have plans in place to address reduced water availability.
