ABOUT OUR OFFICE
The Piedmont Regional Office (PRO) provides planning services to a nineteen county region consisting of the western Piedmont, northern foothills and the mountain counties that border Virginia. While this service region includes both the Piedmont-Triad metro area (Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem) and the Charlotte area, our services primarily focus on smaller and mid-size communities beyond these urbanized areas. Our staff has expertise in strategic planning, long-range planning and visioning, the development and implementation of land use ordinances, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), downtown revitalization, historic preservation and North Carolina planning statutes. We also provide customized training programs to local planning boards, boards of adjustment, historic district commissions and governing boards.

PRO NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Piedmont Regional Office (PRO) staff recently completed work on the Mitchell River Small Area Plan for Surry County. The Mitchell River is classified as an outstanding water source and Mitchell River area residents were concerned about potential negative effects that future development might have on the area. Three goals of the Mitchell River Small Area Plan are to manage future growth and development, maintain water quality, and protect scenic views. PRO staff provided facilitation and technical assistance in cooperation with the Surry County Planning Department throughout the duration of the project.

The Piedmont Regional Office has also completed work on several other projects this year. Among the projects, PRO staff assisted the Towns of Dobson, Ramseur, and Stanfield with major revisions to their land use regulations. PRO staff has also prepared a downtown market study for the Town of Dobson in partnership with the NC State College of Design. The Downtown Market Study prepared by PRO staff will complement the streetscape and branding studies completed by the College of Design. PRO staff also completed work with the Towns of Midland and New London on the development of updated land use plans.
The Piedmont Regional Office is currently assisting Montgomery County with development of their first ever Land Use Plan with a goal of completing the planning process in the summer of 2010. PRO staff have also started work on the development of land use plans for the Towns of Jonesville (Yadkin County) and Red Cross (Stanly County). Other projects PRO staff are currently working on include an update of Yadkin County's Land Use Plan and updates to the Town of Mount Gilead's development regulations.
