The Urgent Needs category provides funds to help communities recover from disasters that threaten public health and safety where no other funds are available.
Program Requirements: The local community must meet the following four-part test:
- Needs have arisen during the preceding 18-month period.
- Needs pose an imminent threat to the health or safety of the community.
- The applicant does not have sufficient local resources.
- Other financial resources are not available or are insufficient to meet such needs.
Funding: Urgent Needs grants are available on an as needed basis, or until funds are exhausted. Projects are generally funded on a first-come, first-serve basis. If more requests are made for funding than is available, the Secretary of Commerce may choose to fund the project that resolves the more serious situation, regardless of the order of submission of requests.
