Benefits of the Extranet Database

The extranet serves as a database for the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development.  This information is used for the state’s:

Why it’s important to have a county contact

A county contact is responsible for entering information about tourism-related events and services in each of North Carolina’s 100 counties.  In addition to providing the state a contact who is familiar with the area, this arrangement offers tourism-related businesses a local contact in the area. Quite often the local contacts may not know of an event or attraction in their region, so they stay informed too.

The Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development understands that manpower can be challenging, but wants to emphasize the importance of having up-to-date county information. The Division appreciate your efforts and will be glad to assist you in any way.

Guidelines for Inclusion in the Extranet Database

The N.C. Department of Commerce’s Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development depends on information from this database to inform consumers at VisitNC.com, 1-800-VISITNC (1 800 847-4862), Welcome Centers and in Division publications.

The extranet listings are used to enhance tourism in your area, thus benefiting your community. You can garner the most benefit by including accurate, timely information and conforming to the following guidelines.

Eligibility requirements

All legally operating, tourism-related businesses located within North Carolina and having a North Carolina site or street mailing address can be listed. Being a member of the tourism marketing organization responsible for entering items into the extranet is not a requirement for inclusion.

Businesses suitable for listing include the following:

  • Attractions (if attractions are open with limited hours-please list times of operation)
  • Accommodations (should meet state health code, if applicable)
  • Hotels/motels
  • Resorts
  • Bed and breakfasts/country inns
  • Vacation realty companies
  • Individual vacation rentals if not listed with a vacation realty company
  • Campgrounds
  • Restaurants
  • Outdoor recreation (including public and semi-private golf courses, outdoor outfitters, parks with outdoor activities, etc.)
  • Unique shopping venues
  • Meeting, convention and banquet facilities
  • Transportation (taxis, airports, train services, etc.)
  • Group tour services
  • Destination marketing organizations or other tourism services.

This database is not suitable for businesses such as adult entertainment, insurance companies, commercial and residential realtors with no vacation rental business, auto sales, construction companies, etc. Businesses that are not related to tourism derive no real benefit from this database.

Events listed in the extranet database should:

  • Be related to tourism and draw attendance from at least 50 miles away
  • Take place in North Carolina
  • List specific dates and contact information
  • Have a brief 300-character or less description.

Examples of events that do not qualify for insertion in the database include but are not limited to:

  • Banquets and awards events
  • Church functions
  • Educational classes, seminars, lectures, symposiums
  • Conferences or conventions
  • Summer camp schedules
  • Fundraising and retail sales events
  • Local recitals
  • Civic club and community meetings
  • Graduations
  • Family or class reunions
  • High school or local sporting events, unless regional or national
  • College sporting events except for tournament play or bowl games.
  • Exceedingly localized events.

Notes:

  • The database ignores certain words in all property titles (including “a”, “at”, “the”) so manipulating property titles in an effort to change the order of a property in an alphabetical list will not work.
  • The Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development reserves the right to exclude, retain or edit any property as it sees fit in order to have the most current and accurate data possible.
